Hargraves Public School

Teaching and Learning
Hargraves capatilises on the advantages that only a smaller school can offer. Small classes mean the students receive a high level of individual tuition. Participation in academic competitions and internet programs provide valuable indicators of progress measured against state and national standards. The school is proud of its academic record and above state average results.

Class Organisation

Children are taught in Literacy and Numeracy groups for four mornings per week.
Mrs. Messner teaches the Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 group.
Mrs. Cooke teaches the Stage 2 group.
Mrs. Rae teaches the Stage 3 group.
Groups are supported by two teacher’s aides.
Staged groups are based on need, not on age.

Music and Performing Arts

A policy of the school is that every child has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and each child is loaned a recorder.

Primary children perform with their recorders at the Department of Education and Training’s Festival of Instrumental Music at the Sydney Opera House, as well as at local eisteddfods and concerts.
A specialist music teacher visits the school once a fortnight.

The school participates in the Musica Viva in Schools program, attending concerts twice a year with other Mudgee Small Schools.

Students have the opportunity to become members of the Mudgee Small Schools choir.

Technology

The school is well resourced with up-to-date technological equipment. We recently received new computers under T4L (Technology for Learning). Two classrooms have electronic whiteboards, which are used in teaching and learning.

All children are issued with email accounts and secure filtered access to the Internet.

Religious Instruction

Non-denominational scripture classes are held each Tuesday. Primary scripture is from 11.30 to 12.15 pm and the Infants scripture is from 12.15 to 1.00 pm. Parents who do not wish for their children to attend scripture classes should contact the Principal.

Sport

Sports lessons are held every week. All children are encouraged to learn new sporting skills and display sportsmanship. The skills for each sport are taught in five week blocks, so each term the children are introduced to two new sports.

The whole school attends swimming lessons for a week at the beginning of year and a week at the end of the year. This initiative is supported by the P & C.

The school participates at the Mudgee Small School’s Swimming and Athletics Carnivals. Successful students compete at the Zone, Area and State Championships.

Students also compete at the Cross-Country Trials.
The school attends sports fitness assessment days with other Mudgee small schools.

The school participates in the Jump Rope for Heart program bi-annually.

Cudgegong Learning Community

Hargraves Public School is a proud member of the Cudgegong Learning Community (CLC), consisting of nineteen local schools that work together to promote and support public education.
